The key to keeping WordPress secure

Dave Clements · Jan 28, 2014 ·

Everyone wants to keep their WordPress install secure and judging by the number of posts about WordPress security, you’d think that it’s quite an advanced topic.

The fact of the matter is that it’s not: out of the box, WordPress is extremely secure. It’s bad practices from there that start to make WordPress insecure.

In fact, most security issues can be solved with a single word: updates. [Read more…] about The key to keeping WordPress secure

Why off-site backups are so important

Dave Clements · Apr 6, 2013 ·

Have you ever accidentally deleted a file or folder on your computer? More than likely I’d bet. Fortunately, you’re saved by the fact that computers have Recycle bins. Web servers: not so much. If you delete something, it’s much more difficult to retrieve.

If you get into the groove of doing work on your server, you can quite easily delete your backups without even thinking, by forgetting that they’re contained within a particular folder that seems innocent enough to delete.

This is where off-site backups come in. Aside from not putting all of your eggs in one basket (one point of failure), having a write-only off-site location where you’re sending your backups enables you to rest in the knowledge that there’s always a recent copy of your site away from where you would ever be messing around with files. Should I really upgrade everything as soon as possible?

Dave Clements · Mar 1, 2013 ·

You may have seen guidance from people in the WordPress community, telling you to keep everything updated. Of course, doing so could potentially mean new code conflicts that you didn’t have before? So is it worth risking it to upgrade?

Yes!

While it is true that whenever anything is new, there’s a chance for growing pains, equally, leaving things as they are could expose security loopholes which previously went undiscovered and which have since been patched by upgrades. Why should I pay someone to maintain my WordPress site?

Dave Clements · Feb 6, 2013 ·

We thought of three main reasons why you might want to pay someone else to maintain your WordPress site: this involves doing the mundane tasks that need to be done to keep WordPress current, secure and backed up, so that your site remains online.

1. Knowledge

The first reason might be that you just don’t know how to maintain WordPress. Getting your site online is one thing, but keeping it there, and keeping it safe is quite another. If you haven’t got a clue how to upgrade WordPress, or back up your content and your database, then having someone do this task for you is well worth the small expense.

2. Expertise

Even if you know a little bit about WordPress, you might not have the confidence that, if something went wrong, you could quickly and confidently repair the issue so that there’s no impact to your site. Have you ever heard of the white screen of death? Have you ever had an automatic plugin upgrade fail? Would you know what to do in these situations? If not, it’s worthwhile having someone on hand who knows these issues inside out, that can quickly fix them, so that you experience as little downtime as possible.

Additionally, someone who really knows what they’re doing will be vigilant and have a watchful eye every time they visit your site, to look for errors and bottlenecks that might be causing issues for your site, as The WP Butler does.

3. Money

Your time is extremely valuable, as is ours. We’re very good at what we do, which is why we can do it particularly fast. If you don’t know your way around WordPress too well, it might take you a lot longer to perform these tasks. That’s time spent away from doing what you do best. And how much can you earn doing what you do? Probably more than the small fee that we charge to maintain your site.

That’s why it makes sense to outsource the maintenance of your WordPress site. You get several hours of your life back every month to concentrate on earning more money, which will exceed the small fee you pay to someone like us to work on your site. It’s plain economics.

So there are three good reasons that we can think of that might make you think differently about whether it makes sense to pay someone to maintain your WordPress site.

Having you spent a bit too much time maintaining your site nervously, hoping something doesn’t go wrong? Maybe it’s time to put it in the hands of a pro.
